“Leaders have to own their position. Without leadership, culture crumbles. “
– Rear Admiral Scott Moore, retired Navy Seal
NATIONAL DUDLEY ON OWNING LEADERSHIP
Rear Admiral Scott Moore has been in it.
In the talk he gave at the 2016 SIOR Spring World Conference he shared his experience running a team within the Navy Seals that couldn’t afford to fail.
The think I love about this quote and his entire talk is that it presupposes that culture is important. Every organization has one—a good one, a bad one, a lazy one, a fragmented one. Every organization has one.
Eight months into a weekly staff meeting at DTSpade where we talk about vision, mission and values (yes, every week) I began to think that I was wasting our time. On and on and on every single week.
But in the twelfth month, I was interviewing a candidate and she asked what this place was about. I was prepared because I’d practiced, but what really shook me was what she said next.
“That’s exactly what they [Partners who’d interviewed her first] said.”
Leading through those meetings set our position. It established our base. And through that process, we’re building a culture to build the city of our dreams. Where have you seen this work?
